Very Fun & Equally as Crowded
I will begin by saying that if you haven’t heard of or been to Union Pool already, you may be a bit late to the game. I say that as a way of letting you know that while Union Pool is really awesome for a lot of reasons, it’s also really popular and has “blown up” and does therefor get fairly more crowded than one may find pleasurable. Not always though. Besides that, it’s massive. It’s big for a bar anywhere, let alone one in the city. I suppose that Union Pool’s description is best told in the form of a walk-through tour.
You walk in, there’s a long bar and a wide open space in between the bar area and the tables. As you can see below, it’s huge. Now, you can go a couple of places from there: either to the back area, which has another bar and a stage / party area. Even when there isn’t live music or a DJ, it’s always more “bumpin'” back there than up front. You can always swing around to the back area, which has either a little pond in the summer or a bon fire in the winter. It’s great. There’s also another bar back there and… A TACO TRUCK. (Amazing).
It’s like a jungle gym for drunk people, I love it equally in the day or nighttime. When you go, I recommend sticking to the usuals, either basic beers or usual drinks like a dark and stormy. I wouldn’t call Union Pool a dive bar, but its not an institution reputable for its cocktails either. All in all, it’s really fun here, the drinks are cheap, the music good, and it attracts a good crowd. I especially love day drinking here in the summer and getting tacos every time I come here. If it’s totally crazy, you can always go to the bar next door, which we have done on several occasions and every time it has provided a smaller-scale and more manageable experience should this one get out of hand.
One thing that did suck was once I stepped outside to call a friend and the manager told me I couldn’t come back in and all my stuff was still inside, as were my friends, phone, wallet, jacket. I was dead sober and stuck outside subject to unnecessary rudeness, so that sucked and the bouncer and manager were rude. But hopefully that was an isolated incident. Photos from their website.
