Respect ya elders.
Dubbed America’s Oldest Italian Bakery Shop, Veniero’s Pasticceria & Caffé has been around since 1894 and are still popular as ever. Their decor is vintage Italian but their pastries, sweets, and cakes are super fresh, made daily and traditionally. They are simply the best.
When you walk into this place, it is a sight to behold, a wide counter of beautiful pastries with the back ceiling-to-floor lined up with cookies. Additional cookie and pastry arrangements sit on top of the counter, sometimes obscuring the employees behind it, and the back fridges distractingly display a multitude of whole cakes – cheesecake, chocolate, coconut cream, etc. This place is old school so you get a number and when it’s called, you’re telling them exactly the poundage of cookies you want or what cake and pastries you desire. It’s literally what being in a kid in a candy store feels like. I have very fond memories of the many desserts I’ve consumed from this place but for now, I’ll just run through a couple of their best hits.
The Strawberry Millefoglie is a Napolean-like dessert, with layers of Bavarian cream and fresh strawberries sandwiched between flaky pastry and topped with a dollop of cream and strawberry. It is by far, one of my favorites.
The Rainbow Cookie is another personal fave because who doesn’t love an almond and chocolate cookie with the texture of a cake and the colors of a rainbow?
Lastly, if you’re looking for something traditional, get the cheesecake – the creamiest I’ve ever had. I am so serious, this beats Junior’s any day.
