Perhaps New York City’s most Googled phrase is: best happy hour with food nyc. A quick search will yield this article from Gothamist first, aptly titled “10 Best Happy Hours with Food in NYC.” First on that list, is Mermaid Inn. So perhaps it should come as little surprise that this is exactly where we headed Wednesday at exactly 5pm sharp.
Now, you may notice something strange is afoot. I’m not in Paris, and I’m resorting to Google to tell me where the best places are in the city. Well, I haven’t been in New York City for two years at this point. As for Paris, ma nouvelle maison, my visa expired, so I’m back. Hope you missed me.
I was walking down Seventh Avenue for all of thirty five seconds yesterday, when an unidentified liquid dripped on my face. Don’t you hate when that happens? Immediately I started questioning all my life’s decisions which had lead me to this point. Two minutes later, when the exact same thing happened, I merely brushed it off and scoffed to myself. I guess it took only that much time to become a seasoned New Yorker again.
So what about Mermaid Inn?
I wanted to love it, and I may return to try to love it again sometime in the near future. But we left feeling a little apathetic, and here’s why.
The food definitely tastes as good as it looks in the photos. It was fresh, well-seasoned, and served with grace. The raw bar options for happy hour are dollar oysters and clams. Those were the best part of the happy hour, in my opinion. The other items were really good, but simply too small for the price. The fish tacos should have been a bit larger, and the ‘fried oyster,’ is literally one oyster. I wish the waitress had corrected me, when I clearly ordered “the fried oysters.” She should have told me it was just one, and that felt shifty to me, like she knew and felt guilty about it.
The wine pours are generous, and the fortune fish with your check was entertaining, though my forecast was a grim one. I’ll have to come back here for dinner sometime, when normal prices yield normal portions. If you’re heading here for happy hour, stick with the raw bar, and you can’t go wrong. The ambiance is very nice, especially in the outdoor garden.
